You’ve thought about it. You’ve realllllly thought about it. Maybe you’ve done it. You read Eat, Pray, Love. You thought, it’s just not for me. I could NEVER do that. I want to share it with someone. I don’t have the time or money. Wouldn’t that be nice?
Still, more femmes than ever are takin’ to the road on their own. They decide when to go, where to go, what they want to do without any compromise or consideration of what other people want. Despite the obvious reasons for rollin’ solo, I genuinely believe it’s something we should ALL do at some point if not on the regular. And, let’s be clear. You don’t have to globe trot to take a solo jaunt. It could be a staycation, a road trip, a short getaway for a weekend. Not all big adventures have to be big adventures. You know what I’m sayin’? For now, I want to get to the meat of somethin'. WHY you should go somewhere A-L-O-N-E.
CUT THE CORD
There are always a million reasons you can’t, don’t have time for, are needed elsewhere, have so many people depending on you, have so much to do, or more likely, expect too much of yourself.
Going somewhere alone is a serious reality check. Sorry, Gina, the world will SURVIVE without you. Especially for a few days. Nope. Stop right there. No but… Tough to accept. Also true.
Cutting the cord to whatever it is in your life that controls your every move and causes you to neglect your own inner voice is a game changer. Unplug. Logout. Sit with the stillness. Slow your breath. Breathe deeply, fully. Close your eyes and listen to the noise of a buzzing café with pretty tiled floors and fresh green plants all around you. The clinking of dishes, the chatter of friends. Heighten your senses and become aware of who you are in that body of yours. Savor that dish. Look at it. Smell it. Ok, take one good picture of it. Sip that latte. Stroll that street. Wander without an agenda. Remember, this was once a way of life. Busy is a modern thing.
EXPAND YOUR EXPERIENCE
I don’t really care if you just go to a different neighborhood in your own city, stay in a hotel for the weekend or fly halfway around the world. You can expand your experience in life just by listening, opening your eyes and approaching life with curiosity.
Curiosity challenges your thought process, your understanding and perception of the world around you. It’s a big, mad world out there and it’s full of beautifully different, diverse and interesting people, places and things. Experiencing life as a an aware human on this sensory loaded planet is quite exquisite when done consciously.
Traveling alone removes all distractions. It opens us up to our surroundings. We pay attention. We look around. We aren’t staring at a screen, or zipping to and fro. We get lost. We get uncomfortable. We ask for help. We try new things. We meet new people. We meet ourselves.
GET TO KNOW YOU
This brings me to the most important point for why EVERY FEMME should travel alone. It’s no secret that we spend most of our lives catering to everyone around us and carrying the weight of the world on our shoulders. We’re multitaskers. It’s what we do. We rock all the time. And we put ourselves last a lot too.
If you humor me and imagine yourself in the one place you’d love to go. Forget everything else. You wanna go where? First place that pops into your head right now. Where is it? Perfect. Why do you wanna go there? What do you wanna do? This is your fantasy right now, girl. Whatever you want. What do you want to eat? Where would you like to stay? What’s it like there? This little exercise alone is some great insight into who your most authentic self is. Now let it live.
Pick somewhere within your means. Go and explore. No one said you have to sell everything and leave it all behind to have an adventure. Though, I’ve done that and if it’s in the cards for you, go for it.
Traveling alone can be intimidating. It can be scary and yes, you must be smart about it. But you, sweet brave one, take on the world everyday. And, this world needs all the authenticity it can get. You’d be amazed at what one short trip away on your own will reveal to you about yourself. You’ll feel stronger, more capable. You’ll be more confident. You’ll sharpen your intuition. Your compassion. Your relatability. You will give yourself and everyone else in your life the gift of a more self aware human being. If you’re scared, good. I get scared all the time. Just don’t let it stop you from doing anything you want to do. Scared means your on to something because it means your comfort zone is in defense mode.
Now, go plan that trip/outing/getaway. There are so many resources and options out there for gals galavanting on their own these days. There are even apps to connect female travelers. Embrace a journey and let go.
