This month, we're hittin' up one of the hippest seasides on the East Coast that's often overlooked. Globetrotting local, Kendra Thurston, dishes on her fave hometown spots.
BIO: Hi! I'm Kendra and I was born and raised in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and like many South Floridians I also am of Caribbean descent.
WHY MY CITY ROCKS: While some may call Fort Lauderdale Miami's little sister, Fort Lauderdale deserves its own recognition as one of Florida’s most sought after destinations.
THE VIBE: Laid back and eclectic, with a twist of spice.
DON'T MISS: The beaches. Fort Lauderdale is home to the United State’s cleanest and clearest beaches. Pompano Beach, Fort Lauderdale Beach and Hallandale Beach, to name a few, are some of the beaches that will amaze you.
DEFINITELY EAT: Primanti Brothers Pizza, they have the best pizza around and are located right on Fort Lauderdale Beach. Which makes it easy to continue enjoying the sun with your slice of pizza. Best part: they are open 24 hours.
UNDERRATED: If you happened to be in town on the first Sunday of the month you must try a relaxing, soulful afternoon in Fort Lauderdale’s scenic Riverwalk Park for a musical delight at the Jazz Brunch from 11-2. Don’t forget to bring a blanket or chair to enjoy the show.
WORTH A TRY: For the adventurous, get off the beaten path and try one of the many Caribbean cuisines that are offered. Donna’s Caribbean Restaurant located in Lauderhill has the tastiest dishes that will make you feel as if you are in the middle of Jamaica with their authentic Caribbean vibes.
KILLER COFFEE: A local favorite, Warsaw Coffee Company, uses locally grown coffee beans.
DOPE DRINKS: There are many dope drinks you can have but the dopest would be the fishbowl drinks from Lulu’s Bait Shack in the Beachfront shopping area. Be sure to have time to spare; it’s a big glass with a whole lot of drink.
LOOK LOCAL: With year round sunshine and warm temperatures, locals like to be cool and comfortable in linens, shorts, and hats for protection.
BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW: We have 11 different cruise lines that call Fort Laurderdale home. It’s a great gateway to see the Caribbean.
BEST WKND ITINERARY:
Start off your Friday night with a happy hour while listening to live music at Blue Martini Lounge. As the night continues, move to one of the lounges in the W hotel. Either one is sure to be a good time.
Saturday’s are always a beach day in Fort Lauderdale. Choose from one of our many beaches to surround yourself with our tranquil, clear water. Or if a pool suits you better layout at one of our many rooftop pools while a DJ plays the latest music. After you have relaxed from taking in all the sun , head to Las Olas for a night of drinks and food. The choices range from a pub style atmosphere to an upscale restaurant.
End your weekend with a fabulous brunch on the intracoastal waterway watching the yachts sail by.
